Paul Morphy’s formal match with Daniel Harrwitz lasted eight games in Paris. Morphy recovered from Harrwitz’s early successes and finished with five wins, two losses, and one draw: 5½–2½.
The formal contest
Edo dates the match from 5 September to 4 October 1858. The eighth game was played on 4 October, and its event note records that Harrwitz resigned the match the following day.
A one-game casual encounter on 4 September appears separately in Edo’s records. The archive correctly confines this event to the eight games of the formal match.
Five wins to two
Morphy won five games, Harrwitz two, and one was drawn, for the 5½–2½ historical score. The surviving games add up to exactly that.
None of the casual games they played before the match are included.
