Netanya International Tournament 1975 — Group A
Jan Timman won the 1975 Netanya International Tournament’s Group A with 9/13, finishing half a point ahead of Vladimir Liberzon and Yair Kraidman in a complete fourteen-player round robin.
The crown group
Netanya’s international festivals paired a leading Group A with a separate lower invitation group. The crown event brought together fourteen players from Israel and abroad, including Miguel Najdorf, Oscar Panno, Luděk Pachman, Daniel Yanofsky and the recent Soviet émigrés Vladimir Liberzon and Leonid Shamkovich.
Every pairing was completed once. Timman scored eight wins, two draws and three losses for 9/13; Liberzon and Kraidman shared second half a point behind, with Leon Lederman fourth on 7½.
Timman’s rise
The victory belonged to the rapid ascent of the 23-year-old Dutch grandmaster. Timman had earned the grandmaster title in 1974 and made Netanya one of a sequence of international successes that established him among the leading players of his generation.
Kraidman's 8½ helped him toward the grandmaster title, which he received in 1976 after strong results at Netanya and Beersheba. There was no playoff: Timman finished half a point clear.
