Reggio Emilia 1973/74
The sixteenth Torneo di Capodanno again refused to pick a single champion: Bulgaria's Luben Popov, 22-year-old Hungarian Gyula Sax, and West Germany's Jürgen Dueball all finished unbeaten on 8/11, each with five wins and six draws. For Popov it was a second consecutive shared first place at Reggio Emilia.
◈An unbeaten trio
The three winners produced identical scorelines — five wins, six draws, no losses — and could not be split. Wikipedia's roll of tournament winners records the edition under Popov's name, and his own biography lists Reggio Emilia 1973/74 among his first prizes; a year earlier he had shared first here with Lengyel and Torre. An international master since 1965 and Bulgarian champion in 1970, Popov was at his career peak, his rating cresting in mid-1973.
Beside him stood two players on the way up. Gyula Sax had won the 1972 European Junior Championship at Groningen and taken the IM title the same year; within months of Reggio Emilia he was a grandmaster, and he later reached the Candidates twice. Jürgen Dueball, a Berlin-born mathematician awarded the IM title in 1973, had won an individual bronze medal for West Germany at the 1972 Skopje Olympiad — and his shared first at Reggio Emilia stands among the best results of his career.
◈The chasing pack
Half a point behind, Hungary's Béla Tóth and the Latvian-born American Edmar Mednis shared fourth on 7½ — Tóth the most combative player in the field with six wins. Mednis, famous as the first man ever to beat Bobby Fischer in a United States Championship and later the author of twenty-six chess books, lost only once. Cuba's Guillermo Estévez — who months earlier had beaten both Tal and Hübner at the Leningrad Interzonal — took sixth on 6½.
The Italian contingent filled the lower half: Carlo Micheli and Renato Cappello shared seventh on 5½, while tournament founder Enrico Paoli — a week short of his 66th birthday — managed only 3½ this time, ahead of Pierluigi Beggi, Sergio Luppi, and Adolivio Capece.
