The twenty-fifth Torneo di Capodanno was won by a legend: Nona Gaprindashvili, women's world champion from 1962 to 1978 and the first woman ever awarded the grandmaster title, went through the tournament unbeaten on 8/11 to finish half a point clear of Georg Danner and Karel Mokrý.
◈A silver jubilee with new backing
Enrico Paoli's New Year tournament reached its twenty-fifth edition in 1982/83, and it did so with fresh momentum: that season the event found a new and important sponsor, the beginning of a rise that would carry the Capodanno to its historic 1991/92 super-tournament — the first Category 18 event ever held, won by Viswanathan Anand ahead of Kasparov, Karpov, and Ivanchuk.
The jubilee field of twelve mixed generations and federations: the Hungarian grandmaster Levente Lengyel, Czechoslovakia's Karel Mokrý, Austria's Georg Danner, Sweden's Michael Wiedenkeller, the Yugoslav veteran Mario Bertok, Germany's Robert Koch, the American Stuart Wagman, and an Italian contingent of Roberto Messa, Mario Lanzani, Ivano Ceschia, and Vittorio Anceschi. At its head sat the only woman in the field — and its eventual winner.
◈Gaprindashvili takes it unbeaten
Nona Gaprindashvili arrived in Reggio Emilia with little left to prove. Women's world champion for sixteen years until Maia Chiburdanidze dethroned her in 1978, she had tied for first at Lone Pine 1977 against a strong open field, and in 1978 FIDE made her the first woman in history to hold the full grandmaster title.
At the Capodanno she was in complete control: five wins, six draws, no defeats — 8 points. Danner and Mokrý finished half a point back on 7½, with Bertok fourth on 7 and Lengyel and Wiedenkeller sharing fifth on 6½. Mokrý would not wait long for his consolation: he returned the following winter and won the twenty-sixth edition outright.
