Samuel Reshevsky defeated Arthur Bisguier 6–4 in a ten-game match at the Manhattan Chess Club. Reshevsky won four games, Bisguier two, and four were drawn; the reigning United States champion's national title was not at stake.
Two streaks and a deciding ninth game
Reshevsky swept the first three games. Bisguier answered by winning games four and five, then held three consecutive draws to keep the match within one point.
Reshevsky's victory in game nine restored a two-point lead before the final draw. Contemporary reports describe Bisguier playing evening sessions after his IBM workday, consistent with conventional classical match play rather than a speed event.
