Rubinstein Memorial 1965
The third Akiba Rubinstein Memorial, born two years earlier from Max Euwe's suggestion that Poland honour its native son, produced a finish nobody could separate: Moscow's Evgeni Vasiukov and Hungary's Péter Dély shared the title outright, each finishing on 9½ from 13, with Yugoslavia's Milan Matulovic close behind on 9.
◈A young memorial finds its footing
The Rubinstein Memorial had begun only in 1963, at the urging of former world champion Max Euwe, who told Polish federation officials that any player, whatever his title, would be proud of an invitation to a tournament dedicated to Akiba Rubinstein's memory. By its third running in the summer of 1965, the event was already drawing a genuinely international field of fourteen to Polanica-Zdrój for a full single round-robin of 91 games.
◈Vasiukov and Dély share the title
Evgeni Vasiukov, a 32-year-old Muscovite who had earned his grandmaster title four years earlier, went through the tournament with eight wins against two losses. Péter Dély of Hungary matched him precisely at the top of the table with seven wins and only one defeat. Both men finished on 9½ points from 13 games, and the two shared first place outright — the second co-championship in the memorial's first three editions.
Milan Matulovic of Yugoslavia took clear third on 9, just half a point back, a reminder of how quickly the young tournament was attracting strong company from across the Eastern bloc.
