Viktor Korchnoi came to the Sarajevo Bosna tournament for the first time in 1969 and simply ran away with it. The Soviet grandmaster scored 12 points from 15 games to finish two full points clear of Milan Matulović — one leg of a dominant year on the circuit.

Korchnoi runs away with it

Korchnoi's 12/15 left no doubt about the outcome. The Yugoslav grandmaster Milan Matulović took clear second on 10, while Svetozar Gligorić and Wolfgang Uhlmann shared third on 9½. Against a field of sixteen playing fifteen rounds, a two-point winning margin was emphatic.

It was the first of several strong results Korchnoi would post at Sarajevo, a tournament he came to know well over his long career.

A banner year

The Sarajevo victory came during one of Korchnoi's best seasons: in 1969 he also won at Luhačovice ahead of Paul Keres and took the Capablanca Memorial in Havana. Already a multiple Soviet champion, he was firmly established among the very strongest players in the world, years before his celebrated World Championship matches against Anatoly Karpov.
