Raymond Keene won the J. D. Slater Young Masters tournament in Southend-on-Sea with an unbeaten 7½/10, a point and a half ahead of William Hartston.
An investment in British chess
Jim Slater sponsored the six-player invitational to support promising English players. A contemporary review of Raymond Keene’s tournament book names the complete field: Keene, Hartston, Peter Lee, Michael Basman, Andrew Whiteley and Daniel Wright. It records a £250 first prize and Slater’s intention to help the strongest player pursue international titles.
Keene finished undefeated with five wins and five draws. Hartston scored 6, Basman and Lee shared 5, Whiteley finished on 3½ and Wright on 3. Each player met every opponent twice, once with each color.
The complete thirty-game record
The contemporary Skakbladet review explicitly describes all thirty tournament games in Keene’s book. All thirty pairings have positive scores in this archive, and every result agrees with the full modern published results list. The book itself and an original contemporary full crosstable were not inspected; the modern results list supplies the detailed comparison.
This September invitational was separate from Southend’s Easter Open and SCCU championship. The original game headers record London, unspecified dates within 1968 and unknown rounds. Those headers and all recorded moves remain unchanged; the historical location and event dates are given here.
