Francisco José Pérez won the fifth Agustín Pujol international tournament with 7/9. Joaquim Durão, Albéric O’Kelly de Galway and Joaquim Serra each finished half a point behind him.
Seven wins were enough
Pérez won seven games and lost to Durão and O’Kelly. Durão defeated both of those rivals, but losses to Serra and Pedro Cherta kept him half a point short of first place. O’Kelly and Serra also scored 6½/9, with Heinz Lehmann next on six.
Visitors and local players
The organizers recruited several visitors after the Madrid zonal tournament. They joined Spanish masters and local representatives, including Tortosa’s provincial champion Enrique Catalán Homedes and Tarragona club champion Venancio del Hoyo. Catalán defeated Dimitrije Bjelica and drew with O’Kelly and Ángel Jimeno.
The last Pujol tournament
The competition opened at the Casino de Tarragona on June 12. Club history gives June 12–20 and records one round at the Universidad Laboral and a prize banquet at Las Palmeras. The contemporary final report, dated June 24, says it ended on the preceding Tuesday, leaving a one-day discrepancy in the closing date. The 1960 tournament was the fifth and last edition associated with the Pujol trophy.
