Lubomir Kavalek won the main group of the Haagse Schaakdagen with 5/7. Dirk van Geet and Heikki Westerinen shared second, half a point behind.
Two wins to finish
Kavalek won his last two games against Jan Timman and Lex Jongsma to claim first place. In the final round Westerinen drew with Hans Ree, while Van Geet defeated Kick Langeweg to join Westerinen on 4½.
Ree finished fourth with four points, followed by Langeweg on 3½ and Timman on three. Hein Piet van der Spek scored two and Jongsma 1½.
An international main group
The main group brought Kavalek and Westerinen together with six Dutch players. Van der Spek earned his invitation as champion of the Haagse Schaakbond; his later account recalls the experience of meeting the stronger international field.
The contemporary final report places the tournament in the canteen of De Nederlanden van 1845. It gives the main group its own final table, separately from the candidates group and the festival’s other competitions. This archive covers that eight-player main group.
All twenty-eight games
Every main-group pairing survives as a legal native score. All eight totals and the four final-round results match the original newspaper report. No default or missing main-group game is identified.
The dates November 14–23 come from Jan Rot’s later club history. Individual game headers retain their original year-only dates and numbered rounds.
