Jan Timman defeated Lajos Portisch 3½–2½ in a six-game KRO match at Hilversum, scoring two wins against one loss with three draws.
Timman takes the lead in the KRO series
Hungarian world-title contender Portisch became Timman's third world-elite guest in the annual KRO studio series. Timman won round two, Portisch equalized after the rest day, and Timman's round-five victory decided the match.
As in the other KRO contests, games were played continuously without adjournment and could last up to seven hours, testing the players' endurance before the studio audience.
