Vienna Wertungsturnier 1939

Erich Eliskases won the eight-player Vienna Wertungsturnier unbeaten with 5½ points from seven games. Hans Müller finished half a point behind, followed by Dr. Herbert Weil on four. All 28 played games are preserved.

◇A close finish

Eliskases drew three of his first four games before defeating Stöckl, Müller and Engels in the last three rounds. Müller lost his opening game to Weil, won five others and finished second after losing their direct meeting. The final-round adjournments were completed on 20 June.

The complete final totals were Eliskases 5½; Müller 5; Weil 4; Engels 3½; Becker 3; Stöckl and Keller 2½ each; Fink 2. Contemporary reports give Eliskases four wins and three draws, and Müller five wins and two losses.

◇The Vienna event

The 11 June announcement called this the first Wertungsturnier der Ostmark and scheduled its start for Monday 12 June at Café Korb, with daily evening play. The eight actual participants met once each over seven rounds. An advance notice named Schenkirzizk, while the played games and final field instead include Fink.

This was the Vienna Wertungsturnier, distinct from the parallel qualifying tournaments and the later German championship at Bad Oeynhausen. The inspected reports do not establish a specific advancement entitlement.

◇The surviving record

Every one of the 28 pairings has a playable score, and the results reproduce all eight contemporary final totals. The recorded rounds and June 12–18 game dates are preserved, including the postponed Eliskases–Fink game and games completed after adjournment.

The 22 June report explicitly names Dr. Herbert Weil, supporting the recorded identification. Six printed game scores have been compared with the archive. Five match in full; the original Müller–Weil publication resigns after 45...Rg2+, while the preserved score adds 46.Kf1 Ne3+. The continuation is retained without a speculative move correction.
