Game No. 358 in Wilhelm Steinitz's The Book of the Sixth American Chess Congress (1891), printed page 425; played April 5, 1889. Steinitz's original notes follow.
- 9.d3 A weak move which seriously loosens his centre.
- 10.Ne5 He had nothing better than P—Q4 now.
- 13.Qf3 Suicidal, but his position was already very bad. If 12 B x P, 12 B—Kt5 ch.; 13 P—B3, 13 Q x B, with a fine game.
- 16.c4 Of course a disastrous blunder, but the game was irredeemable. If 16 P—B3, 16 P—K4, and wins. Again if 16 Kt—K4, 16 P—KB4, and wins.
