Game No. 363 in Wilhelm Steinitz's The Book of the Sixth American Chess Congress (1891), printed page 429; played May 15, 1889. Steinitz's original notes follow. The original analysis is preserved, including 20...R x Kt in note (e), where Black's own Knight blocks the Rook's path.
- 5…Bd7 If 5...Kt x P; 6 Q—K2, 6 Kt—B4!; 7 P x P, 7 B—K2!; 8 P—Q4, with the superior game.
- 6…a6 Losing a Pawn. It was necessary now to capture the BP.
- 9…Nxe4 Not deep enough, though rather ingenious up to the point of its incorrectness.
- 11…O-O-O It only amounted to a transposition of moves if he checked at once by Kt — B7, for he had then to guard against Kt x B disch. or Kt — Kt 6 disch.
- 21…Qxd2 The loser. He could at least prolong the struggle by 20...R x Kt; 21 Q x P ch., 21 K—Kt sq.!; 22 K—R3, 22 P—Kt4; etc.
