Fight against a pawn majority with simultaneous hemming in of the enemy knights. The hemming in of the Knights with simultaneous fight against a pawn majority is a very different problem, one would say, to the solving of which outstanding technical ability will be needed. But this is not so. Anyone who is moderately versed in the art of restraining and blockading pawn-complexes, will soon find to his satisfaction that in the class of positions in question the hemming in of the Kts is more easily compassed than in the case considered under §3. We can say with some justice that the restraint of the pawn-majority once in operation carries with it automatically the hemming in of the Kts; that is to say the blockading pawns may easily develop into obstructions to their own Kts. An example is found in the following game. Harmonist—Tarrasch, 1889.
- 11…Be6 White’s majority has but slight mobility.
- 19…Kxd8 The exchange of Rs has sensibly increased the radius of action of Black’s K.
- 28…c5 In the position now reached White’s pieces are fairly well shut in. This gratifying state of affairs has followed almost automatically from Black’s successfully executed blockade of White’s PK5 and in particular his PKB4. This cannot surprise us; for have we not often experienced how the whole situation may be favourably affected, as if by a miracle, by a successful blockade?
- 32…Bc6 The intention is K-Q4 followed by B-Q2-B4, driving the Kt yet further back.
- 34.Bg3 Kt-Q6 offered the possibility of a draw, by playing for B’s of opposite colour.
- 36…Bf5 Blockade!
- 39.Ke3 White is ‘stalemated’.
- 41.axb4 White is lost.
