Game 31. Nimzowitsch—Anton Olson. Played in 1924. In which seven White pawns show greater collective mobility than eight Black ones. Thus does mind (i.e., dynamic effect) triumph over mere matter.

1. 7.g4 The collective mobility of White’s King’s side pawns already makes itself quickly felt.
2. 9.Nb5 In order to provoke P-QR3, after which the lack of protection under which the QKtP will suffer is to form the basis of a sharp combination.
3. 13…Nb4 Else there would follow QR-Q1 and P-Q4 with advantage to White.
4. 16…Bxb4 Or PxKt; BxQKtP. Cf. the note to White’s 9th move.
5. 17.Bc1 White has succeeded in wresting the long diagonal from his opponent.
6. 19.g5 The connexion between ‘sacrifice’ and ‘blockade’ would have stood out in even sharper relief had the continuation been 19. P-KB5, P-KKt4, 20. P-KR4 with an enduring attack, while Black’s pawn plus would have but an illusory value.
7. 19…Nc6 Or 19. ....PxKtP; 20. KtxKtP (threatening B-KR3), 20. ....Kt-B3; 21. P-KB5.
8. 22…Qh5 To protect the KP.
9. 25…Kh6 Forced.
