Game 36. Nimzowitsch—Taubenhaus, Petrograd, 1913. Illustrates the isolated QP. The source dates the event 1913; the archive dates this game 23 January 1914.
- 10.Be3 P-Q5 would be bad because of Kt-QR4; P-QKt3, B-QKt5; nor would 10. B-KKt5 be good, e.g., 10. ... P-QKt3, etc.
- 10…b6 P-QR3 and P-QKt4 would unnecessarily weaken the point QB4.
- 15.Nb5 A strategically noteworthy conception. White says to himself: in the centre I am strong, therefore a strategical diversion is justified; moreover, I have no particular wish after say 15. B-R6 or Q3 to be saddled with hanging pawns. The right move was, nevertheless, B-R6. For example: 15. B-R6, Kt x Kt; 16. P x Kt, Q-B2; 17. B x B, Q x B; 18. P-QB4 with eventually P-QR4-R5.
- 16…Ra8 If R-B2, then B x P.
- 19…Nxe3 There was no occasion for this. There were other lines of play to be considered, (i) 19. ... P-QR4 and KR-QB1, or (ii) 19. ... KR-Q1 followed by Kt-Q2-KB1; for (iii) Kt-K1, see the remarks on Diagram CL in II. iii, § 4, p. 190.
- 20…b5 Weakens the point QB4. After 20. ... P-QR4 (instead of the text move) and KR-QB1, there would not be much wrong with him.
- 21.Rc5 By occupying this outpost station White gets play in the QB file.
- 23.a3 What now follows could serve as a text book example for play in an open file. The slowness with which White step by step gains in terrain is also of significance from the point of view of position play.
- 24…Nd6 If Q-Kt4, then Kt x BP!
- 25…f5 In order to relieve the KBP and to make Q-Kt4 possible.
- 26…Ne8 Black can undertake nothing.
- 28.Bf3 Breaks down the opposition in the QB file.
- 29…Ne8 If 29. ... Kt-K5; then 30. P-B6!, P-KKt4; 31. P x B, R-KB1; 32. R-B8 and wins.
- 31.c6 The QBP, the fruit of the operations on the Q's file, now brings the decision.
