The following illustrative game is apparently complicated, but it is this in its motives only; in reality it is the fight against White’s PK4 which dominates. Shoosmith—Nimzowitsch, Ostend, 1907.
- 7…exd4 If 7. ....R-K1, then 8. P-Q5 and Black will be cramped for a long time. For instance, 8. ....Kt-QB4; 9. B-K3, KtxB; 10. QxKt, Kt-Q2; 11. P-QKt4, P-QR4; 12. P-QR3, etc.
- 10…a6 This advance of Black will soon be intelligible.
- 15…b5 Now the situation is clear: Black keeps an eye on White’s KP and seeks at the same time to be rid of the disturbing QBP, since the latter makes his PQ3 backward.
- 18…b4 We have here to do with a chain formation, certainly rather an unusual one. The links of the chain are White’s PQKt3 and PQB4, Black’s PQKt5 and KtQB4(!), for why as an exception should not an officer be allowed to play the rôle of a pawn in a chain? The plan consists in the manœuvre B-QB1, Kt-Q2-B4 and P-QR4-R5 attacking the White enemy base the PQKt3. Accordingly P-QKt5 involved the transference of the attack from White PQB4 to his PQKt3.
- 22.g4 A mistake which leaves his PKB4 for a moment insufficiently defended; but this short moment is long enough to allow Black to break through brilliantly.
- 22…Ne6 Exploiting White’s mistake.
- 27.Kg1 B-K4?, RxKt!
- 28…Qc6 Resigns. The reader may here be referred to my games against Teichmann and Blackburne (Nos. 2 and 32).
