Notes by H. N. Pillsbury.
- 9.Nc3 R to Q sq, ch, seems feasible; it would prevent the King from reaching the post at Q B 3, which it frequently attains in this variation of the opening.
- 12.Bc3 12. Kt to B 4, B to B 5; 13. K R to Q sq, K to B sq; 14. P to Q Kt 3, B to Kt 4; 15. P to Q B 4, B to B 3; 16. Kt to Q 5, &c., seems a good variation for White, and perhaps better than the text.
- 13.Nd2 R to Q sq, ch, first would have kept the Black King out of the position at B 3.
- 15…Rg8 Preventing White from continuing P to K Kt 4, which he would now meet with P x P.
- 19.Bd2 It might be safer to play R to Q B sq before the text move.
- 23.Bxd4 This does not seem to turn out very well, mainly because Black retains both Bishops. 23. P to Q Kt 4, and if B x P; 24. Kt x P, K to Kt 3; 25. Kt (Kt 3) to K 4, &c., seems to clear the way for White's Pawns on the King's side to advance; for if P to Q B 3, then 26. Kt x B, P x Kt; 27. Kt to B 6, B x Kt; 28. R x B, and should win. Should Black instead continue 23. P to Kt 3, then 24. P x P, P x P; and the B x Kt, &c., continuation would have given White a powerful attack with both Rooks in fine play.
- 25…Rd5 By this fine manoeuvre Black eventually regains the Pawn with the better game. Should White now continue R x P, B x K P, and the Rook is in trouble.
- 29…Rd8 Forcing the win of one of the Pawns.
- 41.Kf5 White should have taken the Pawn first, and a drawn game would have resulted.
- 41…Kd3 Black throws away the game, which seems to be won by P to B 7. 42. P to Kt 5, B x P; 43. K x B, K to Q 6; 44. Kt to B sq, ch, K to Q 7; 45. Kt to Kt 3, ch, K to Q 8; 46. K to B 5 (best), P to R 4; 47. P to Q R 4, P to Kt 4; 48. P x P, P to R 5; 49. P to Kt 6 (or 49. Kt to B sq, K x Kt; 50. P to Kt 6, P to R 6, &c., Black should win), P x Kt; 50. P to Kt 7, P to Kt 7; 51. P Queens, P to B 8 (Q), and should win. In both these variations the Pawn at the seventh square can be forced to Queen shortly. [Mr. Lasker pointed out this win immediately on the conclusion of the game. The position will well repay study.—Ed.]
