- 10…c5 The situation is rather difficult for Black. The move made is not the best. 10) .... Kt - Kt 5, as played by E. Cohn in Game 153, of the 17th round, seems more to the point. Then if 11) B x B, Q x B; 12) P - B 4, Black plays P - K B 4 with the continuation 13) Kt x P, B x Kt; 14) P x B, Q - K 6 ch; or if 13) Q R - K sq, P x P; 14) Kt x P, Q - R 5; 15) P - K R 3, Kt - B 3; and if 13) P - K R 3, P x P; 14) Kt x P, Kt - B 3; 15) Q R - K sq, Kt x Kt; 16) R x Kt, Q - B 2, with an even game.
- 11.Nf5 A forcible move. The opening of the K file is to White's advantage. Moreover, the Pawn at K B 4 is very useful.
- 18.Ne4 An excellent move. Its purpose is to remove the Black Knight, which is a strong defensive piece and blocks the K B P. White has now every advantage: the open file, the freer field, and, besides, safe Pawns, whilst Black's Q R P is in jeopardy.
- 19…Kf8 Likewise after 19) .... R x R; 20) Q x R, R - Q sq; 21) Q - Kt 7 or 20) .... P - Q 4; 21) Q - K 7, Q x Q; 22) R x Q, R - Q B sq; 23) R - Q 7 Black would not lie on a bed of roses.
- 20.f6 In conjunction with his next move, a pretty combination, which came very near winning the game, and which should probably have won by force.
- 26.Qg5+ White thinks he can win the end game because Black has a doubled Pawn. But he might have waited, and first deprived Black's doubled Pawn of its mobility by 26) P - Q Kt 3. This he might have followed with 26) .... R - B 2; 27) P - K B 4 and advance of the King and P - Kt 4, with good prospects of winning.
- 30.Kf1 White can no longer prevent P - B 5. If 30) P - Q Kt 3, K - K 3; 31) K - B sq, K - Q 4; 32) K - K 2, P - B 5 just in time.
