1. 8…Qd8 Q to K B 4; 9. Kt x Kt, B to K 2; 10. B to Kt 5, Castles; 11. Kt x P, Q to Kt 3, leads to an equal game. If for White 9. R x Kt, ch, B to K 2; 10. Kt x P, Kt x Kt; 11. Q x Kt, B to K 3, and White dare not capture the proffered Pawn on account of the following: 12. Q x Kt P, B to B 3; 13. Q to Kt 3, Castles (Q R); 14. R to K sq, K R to Kt sq; 15. Q to B 4, R x P, ch; 16. K x R, Q to R 6, ch; 17. K to R sq, B x Kt, and wins.
2. 9…Be6 Very much inferior to B to K 2; 10. Kt x P, P to B 4; 11. R to B 4, Castles; 12. Kt x Kt, Q x Q, ch; 13. Kt x Q, P x Kt, &c. Black’s two Bishops should prove ample compensation for the doubled Pawn.
3. 12…f6 This move should have cost Black the game at once. B to K 2 was the only resource.
4. 13.Qe2 The following variation (first pointed out by Mr. Lipschuetz, of New York) forces a winning attack: 13. B x P, P x B; 14. Q to R 5, ch, B to B 2 (best); 15. R to K sq, ch, B to K 2; 16. Q to R 6, Q to B 4 (best); 17. Kt to Kt 5 (not R [Q 4] to K 4, which allows Black to Castle Q R); 18. Q x B P, Q x Kt; 19. R to Kt 4, ch, B to Kt 3; 20. R x B, ch, P x R; 21. Q x P, ch, K to R sq; 22. R x B and wins.
5. 13…Bc5 An oversight which loses in a few moves. 13. K to B 2; 14. R to K sq, B to Q 3 (if P x B; 15. R to Q 8, and wins), left Black with a fairly good game.
6. 17.Qe5 Q to B 5 was more direct and decisive.
