1. 8.b3 This is not the correct method of development; P to K 4 followed by B to K 3 was preferable.
2. 10.Ne2 Without any special tendency, better was Q to K 2, or B to Q 3, followed by P to K 4.
3. 19…c5 In this game a great many moves are made without any special effect. Black has obtained an equal game long ago.
4. 23.Nd2 No clear plan can be perceived in White's play.
5. 26…Nf6 Nor is there much of a plan in Black's game; this is perhaps the most tedious game that was played at Hastings.
6. 35…Qg6 Both players have a great deal of patience.
7. 45.g5 Now at last it begins to get more interesting. White has arranged his Pieces with some definite object, and with this move he succeeds in breaking through.
8. 45…Bf5 After P to B 4 White might have sacrificed for the King's Pawn with success.
9. 47.g4 A great mistake, which gives Black an opportunity for a beautiful combination by which he decides the game in his favour. With the simple move 47. B x P White had an advantage; for instance, if B x P, 48. P to Q 6, ch, B to K 3; 49. P to Q 7, R to K 2; 50. B to Q B 7 and wins; again, if 47.... B x B; 48. R x B, R x R; 49. P to Q 6, ch, with an advantage for White; or again, if 47.... R x B; 48. R x R, Q to B 3; 49. R to K 8, ch, K to Kt 2; 50. P to Kt 5, or P to Kt 3.
10. 49…Qf4 The decisive move; if the Rook moves from K 5, then Q to R 7, ch, and Q to R 8 is threatened.
11. 56.Be2 After K to B sq there comes Q to Q R 6, ch, and B to K B 4 wins the Queen.
12. 56…Qb3+ The Queen is lost after 57. Q to Q B 2, by Q x P, ch; 58. K to B sq, B to R 6, ch; 59. K to Kt sq; or after 57. K to B sq, by Q to R 6, ch; 58. K to Q sq, Q to R 8, ch; 59. K to B 2, B to K B 4.
