Beverwijk 1946 (Hoogovens)
The eighth Hoogovens tournament was the first to open its doors beyond the Netherlands, and it became one of the earliest international tournaments staged in post-war Europe. Belgium's Alberic O'Kelly de Galway took clear first with 7/9 — losing his very first game, then going unbeaten the rest of the way to overhaul the Swedish favourite Gösta Stoltz.
◈The steelworks opens up
The Hoogovens tournament began in 1938 as a small event organised by the Koninklijke Hoogovens steelworks near IJmuiden, restricted at first to Dutch players. After the war it returned as the eighth edition and, for the first time, invited players from abroad: the field grew to ten, with O'Kelly of Belgium and Gösta Stoltz of Sweden joining a Dutch contingent of eight.
It was one of the first international chess tournaments held anywhere in Europe after World War II. Food shortages still gripped the continent, so the closing banquet was served pea soup — "inexpensive fare of the common people" — a modest touch that became a lasting tradition, served as the first course of the concluding dinner ever since, even after the event moved to Wijk aan Zee.
◈O'Kelly's late surge
O'Kelly opened with a first-round loss but did not lose again, grinding out 7 points from 9 games. Stoltz led for much of the way, only to slip with a surprising defeat in the final round that handed O'Kelly clear first by half a point.
It stands as the only outright victory ever by a Belgian player in the long history of the tournament, and it launched O'Kelly as a fixture on the post-war international circuit.
