Beverwijk 1964 (Hoogovens)
The 26th Hoogovens tournament, staged each January by the Dutch steelmaker in the North Sea town of Beverwijk, drew a strong sixteen-player field. At the top, veteran Soviet star Paul Keres — long the strongest player never to win the world title — tied for first with his younger Estonian compatriot Iivo Nei, the two of them finishing half a point clear of Lajos Portisch.
◈The steelworks tournament
The Hoogovens tournament began in 1938 as a chess event organised by the Koninklijke Hoogovens steelworks near IJmuiden, and by the 1960s its top group had grown into one of the strongest annual round-robins in Western Europe. The 1964 edition — the 26th — was contested in Beverwijk as a single round-robin of sixteen players over fifteen rounds, 120 games in all.
The field mixed grandmaster regulars with the leading Dutch players: alongside Keres, Nei and Portisch came Borislav Ivkov, Bent Larsen, Bruno Parma, Levente Lengyel, Miroslav Filip and Klaus Darga, with Jan Hein Donner, Coen Zuidema and Theo van Scheltinga carrying the home colours.
◈Keres and Nei on top
Keres and Nei each scored 11½ from 15 to share first, a half-point ahead of Portisch on 11 and a full point clear of Ivkov on 10. Larsen, Lengyel and Parma tied for fifth on 9½. Contemporary Dutch reports billed the joint winners simply as the two Russians, though both were Estonians who competed under the Soviet flag; Keres was one of the great figures of mid-century chess, and Nei a many-times champion of Estonia.
For Keres the result was another entry in a long ledger of elite tournament finishes; for Nei, sharing first at Beverwijk against this company was among the finest results of his career.
