A new generation qualifies

Twelve players came through the 1985 Interzonals and were joined by three seeds from the previous Candidates — Smyslov, Korchnoi and Ribli — plus a wild card for former World Champion Boris Spassky, filling the field to sixteen. Each played all fifteen others once, 120 games in all.

The top three finishers advanced automatically, and three of the youngest men in the hall took those places: Artur Yusupov, Rafael Vaganian and Andrei Sokolov all finished on 9/15, half a point clear of the rest. It was a changing of the guard — the veterans Smyslov, Korchnoi and Spassky finished in mid-table.

The play-off for fourth

Jan Timman and Mikhail Tal tied for fourth and fifth on 8½, level for the single remaining qualifying place. A six-game play-off between them ended 3–3, so the spot was awarded on tournament wins: Timman had scored four during the round-robin to Tal's three, and advanced to join the leading trio in the Candidates matches.

Because the archive folds those six extra play-off games into the event, the auto-computed table pushes Tal and Timman artificially to the very top — they each show far more games than everyone else. The true round-robin table below restores the official order, with Yusupov, Vaganian and Sokolov sharing first.
