Dutch Championship 1996

A final-round reversal leaves Timman and Sokolov tied at the top
7–19 June 1996 · Amsterdam, Netherlands
Shared first (Sokolov, Timman) — 8½/11

Jan Timman returned to the Dutch Championship for the first time since 1987 and carried a one-point lead into the final round. Then Timman lost to Jeroen Piket while defending champion Ivan Sokolov won, leaving the two leaders together on 8½/11 and forcing a later title match.

The lead disappears in one afternoon

Timman entered round eleven a point ahead of Sokolov. His defeat with Black against Piket opened the door, and Sokolov's victory over Rini Kuijf erased the gap completely.

A round-robin without a champion

Both leaders finished with seven wins, one loss and three draws. Friso Nijboer and John van der Wiel shared the next score on 7½, but the national title itself remained between Timman and Sokolov until their four-game playoff later in the year.
