Evans–Lombardy Match 1962
Evans recovers from an opening loss to take the Edgar Trophy
Larry Evans defeated William Lombardy 5½–4½ in a ten-game New York match for the George P. Edgar Trophy. Evans won four games, Lombardy three, and three were drawn across the Marshall and Manhattan chess clubs.
A comeback decided by an adjournment
Lombardy won the first game, but Evans recovered to lead 3–2 at the halfway point. The match remained unsettled when both games nine and ten were adjourned.
Game nine was eventually drawn, securing the match for Evans before Lombardy won game ten. The adjournments and multi-day schedule establish conventional classical match play.
