The event and its record

Four players shared first place in the twenty-eighth Hastings Premier: Harry Golombek, Antonio Medina García, Jonathan Penrose and Daniel Yanofsky, each with 5½ points from nine games. The tournament ran from 30 December 1952 to 8 January 1953 at the White Rock Pavilion.

All forty-five games of the ten-player round robin are available. Ten were played in December and thirty-five in January; both calendar-year source groups form this one tournament. Their results reproduce the complete published table. The Premier Reserves and lower congress sections were separate events.

All five final-round games were drawn, leaving the four leaders together. Contemporary reports specifically describe the short Penrose–Tylor and Golombek–Yanofsky draws; their brief scores are retained as complete games.
