Incomplete record·23 of 29 games archived

Incomplete record. This archive holds 23 of the 29 games played; 6 are missing. Six round-robin scores remain unpreserved; the separate drawn first-place playoff is included among the 23 retained records. Its five-ply score is preserved without a claim that the complete historical mainline survives.

The Schachgesellschaft Augustea celebrated its fortieth anniversary with an eight-player master tournament. Fritz Riemann and Curt von Bardeleben tied on 5½/7 and shared the first two prizes after their playoff ended in a draw.

A shared first prize

Jacques Mieses took third with 4½/7 and Theodor von Scheve fourth with 4. Wilfried Paulsen and Arnold Schottländer scored 2½ each, Siegbert Tarrasch 2 and Johannes Minckwitz 1½. The final table and report appeared in Deutsche Schachzeitung in January 1889. Riemann had only needed a draw against Mieses in his last game to take first alone; the report says he rejected Mieses’s offer and lost.

A parallel fourteen-player Hauptturnier and two closing consultation games were separate competitions or exhibitions at the same celebration. They were not qualifying stages for this master event and are not part of its standings or completeness count.

What survives

The archive retains 23 approved native records against 29 documented played games: 22 of the 28 main-event pairings and the drawn playoff. The grid marks the six absent main-event pairings; the playoff remains in the game list without changing the seven-round point totals.

The original table contains a one-cell printing error in Paulsen’s row against Riemann. Its reciprocal result, Paulsen’s printed 2½ total and the independently checked 81-ply Riemann–Paulsen score agree on a Riemann win. All native results and moves are preserved.

The native Mieses–Schottländer record is dated 6 December, while its original published score says 5 December. The playoff carries the source date 10 December and retains only five opening plies; its exact date and complete historical endpoint have not been independently established. Those native headers and moves remain unchanged.
