Maróczy edges Schlechter in Monte Carlo's six-player masters event
7–18 February 1904 · Monte Carlo, Monaco
Maroczy won with 7½/10

Six masters met twice in Monte Carlo in February 1904. Géza Maróczy scored 7½/10 to win by half a point from Carl Schlechter, with Frank Marshall another half-point behind.

The masters' tournament

Maróczy, Schlechter, Marshall, Isidor Gunsberg, Georg Marco, and Rudolf Swiderski formed the field. Each pairing was played twice, once with each color, for thirty games in all.

The event was followed at the same location by a separate six-player Rice Gambit tournament. That thematic competition has its own collection in this archive.

Three players in the race

Maróczy's 7½ placed him first. Schlechter finished on 7, Marshall on 6½, and the remaining three players scored 4 or fewer. The published crosstable and the complete thirty-game record agree on those totals.
