22 February – 3 March 1904 · Monte Carlo, Monaco
Frank Marshall and Rudolf Swiderski shared first on 6/10

The 1904 Rice Gambit Tournament made a single opening idea the premise of an entire event. Six masters played a double round-robin in Monte Carlo, and Frank Marshall and Rudolf Swiderski shared first place with 6/10.

A thematic companion event

Marshall, Swiderski, Jacques Mieses, Georg Marco, Theodor von Scheve, and Leó Forgács contested the event. Each player met every opponent twice, producing thirty games, all organized around the Rice Gambit.

It followed Monte Carlo's separate six-player masters' tournament, which had ended four days earlier. The two competitions shared a place and several names but kept independent standings.

First place shared

Marshall and Swiderski both scored 6/10. Mieses was only half a point behind on 5½, Marco scored 5, von Scheve 4½, and Forgács 3. The shared first place requires no tie-break winner in the historical record.
