Ostend 1905 Play-off
Alongside the great Ostend 1905 masters' tournament that Géza Maróczy won, four of its competitors — Georg Marco, Richard Teichmann, Frank Marshall and Paul Leonhardt — contested a second, self-contained six-game round-robin. Marco came out on top with 2/3, ahead of Marshall and Leonhardt on 1½ and Teichmann on 1.
◈A contest within the tournament
In the main double round-robin these four masters finished among the middle of the fourteen-player field — Marco and Teichmann shared fifth on 14/26, while Marshall and Leonhardt were part of the group tied on 12½. This extra all-play-all among them is recorded in ChessBase's Mega2024 as a distinct event ('Ostend2'), separate from the 182-game main tournament.
On its participants and structure it has every appearance of a play-off for the minor prizes, but the narrative sources consulted for Ostend 1905 do not describe its exact purpose, so it is presented here simply as what the record preserves: a genuine six-game contest, distinct from the main event, that Marco won.
