Schultz Memorial — Stockholm 1919

Bogoljubov dominates a Stockholm triple round robin
3–27 November 1919 · Stockholm, Sweden — Stockholms Schacksällskap
Bogoljubov won with 12½/15

Efim Bogoljubov won Stockholm’s Schultz Memorial with 12½ points from fifteen games. Six players met three times apiece, and Bogoljubov finished two points clear of Rudolf Spielmann in the first competition for the host club’s jubilee trophy.

A memorial and a jubilee trophy

Stockholms Schacksällskap organized the international event in memory of J. G. Schultz. It also inaugurated the club’s jubilee trophy, bringing Bogoljubov, Spielmann and Réti together with the Swedish players Gustaf Nyholm, Anton Olson and Ernst Jacobson.

Otto Löwenborg began the tournament but withdrew after the first cycle because of ill health. The contemporary table omits his results and gives the six finishers fifteen counted games each. This archive retains all forty-five counted games and his five annulled records. The standings below exclude only those five records, while every score remains available in the game list.

Bogoljubov by two points

Bogoljubov scored 12½/15, followed by Spielmann on 10½ and Réti on 8½. Nyholm made 5½, Olson 4½ and Jacobson 3½.

The winner’s margin came from sustained dominance rather than a playoff: every official pairing was completed, and the final table required no tiebreak.

Fifty records, including two short scores

Fifty game records survive in this collection. Löwenborg–Olson, round four, and Réti–Bogoljubov, round sixteen, each contain only 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5. Their recorded moves are retained, but these five-ply records do not establish that the games ended there. No fuller continuation was found in the contemporary material checked.

The published official table confirms Réti’s loss to Bogoljubov. Löwenborg’s draw with Olson is retained from the supplied score; the result has not been independently confirmed, and no fuller score was found. It is excluded from the official standings with his other four records. The separate memorial blitz tournament held on 28 November is not included in this collection.
