◈A former world champion enters the KRO studio
The second annual KRO match brought former world champion Spassky to face Dutch number one Timman in six continuous-play games before the studio audience.
Timman won the opening game and Spassky equalized in round three. After the 20 December rest day, three further draws left the match level.
The KRO format prohibited adjournments and allowed games to run as long as seven hours; it was a long-form endurance contest rather than rapid or blitz chess.
