Incomplete record·10 of 66 games archived

Incomplete record. This archive holds 10 of the 66 games played; 56 are missing. The organizer’s later full twelve-player table explicitly records 66 games and agrees with all contemporary final totals. Ten approved scores survive. No contemporary complete round/default census was acquired; this historical-count limit is disclosed.

Hermann Pilnik won the twelve-player international celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of Schachverein Stuttgart 1879. His unbeaten 9½/11 kept him half a point ahead of Albéric O’Kelly.

A jubilee shared with international guests

The contemporary Schach-Echo report gives Pilnik 9½, O’Kelly 9, Machate and Wolk 8, Schuster 7, Hans Schmid 5, Lutz and Oette 4½, Chantal Chaudé de Silans 4, Herter 3½, and Alfons Schmid and Osswald 1½. Pilnik finished unbeaten; O’Kelly recovered from an opening-round loss to Schuster.

Schuster’s report says Chaudé became ill during the tournament, but she still defeated him after seven hours. It describes a closing banquet at which all participants received prizes. The full later table contains an ordinary result for every pairing and explicitly records 66 games; no default or withdrawal is marked. A complete contemporary round-by-round default census has not been obtained.

What survives in the archive

Ten games are preserved here. The full later table accounts for 66 games, leaving 56 pairings without an archived score. Its totals agree with the original 1954 report, but the table itself is a later reconstruction, reproduced by the organizer and the Württemberg federation newsletter.

The contemporary printed Herter–Pilnik score changes the opening move order and ends with resignation after 70...Qc4. The archived version continues 71.Bd2. A later O’Kelly–Machate reference also changes an opening move order. The archive preserves the consulted source versions.

The original report names Lutz without a first name. The archive and organizer’s table call him Karl; a later Belgian reference calls him Erich. That discrepancy remains unresolved. The source’s November-only dates are retained even though later accounts date the event through 5 December.
