USSR First League — Tallinn 1983
Josif Dorfman won the 51st Championship's First League at Tallinn with an unbeaten 11/17. Lev Psakhis and Konstantin Lerner followed on 10½, while Andrei Kharitonov and Boris Gulko took the remaining places in the top five that advanced to the 1984 Soviet final.
Seventeen rounds without a loss
Dorfman's five wins and twelve draws put him half a point clear. Psakhis scored 10½ with five wins and one loss; Lerner reached the same total without losing, using four wins and thirteen draws. Kharitonov and Gulko both scored 10, with the historical table placing Kharitonov fourth and Gulko fifth.
The rest of the field included Yuri Balashov, Ratmir Kholmov, Sergey Makarichev, Elizbar Ubilava, Viktor Gavrikov, Vladimir Malaniuk, and the young Estonian Lembit Oll. Every player appears in all seventeen rounds.
From Tallinn to the Soviet final
The five qualifiers joined players promoted from four semifinals in the 51st USSR Championship final, which Andrei Sokolov won at Lvov in April 1984. All 153 games of the eighteen-player Tallinn round robin survive and add up to the published leading scores.
