Game 42. Nimzowitsch—Marshall, New York, 1927. The following game won a brilliancy prize in the New York tournament, 1927.
- 7.Nd2 To establish himself at QB4.
- 10.Ne3 Planning P-QR4-R5 and to post the Kt anew at QB4. Black would have done better to exchange Kts on his 9th move. White now gets the advantage.
- 18.f4 The prelude to a complicated attacking operation which was the more unexpected since Kt-K4 gave a good game without any effort. But for once I wanted to go in for a combination.
- 21.Qb3 White gets compensation for the QP. Note, inter alia, that Black's Queen side is difficult to develop.
- 21…Rxd5 The answer to Kt x QP would have been QR-K1!!, by which B-K3 would have been prevented because of B x QBP. Black would then have been quite helpless, and White could have won by, e.g., B-Q2 followed by the doubling of the R's in the K file.
- 23.Bg5 There is a peculiar point in this move. If, that is to say, 23. ... B-K3, and it is with this parry that White has above all things to reckon, then 24. Q x P (threatening B x Kt and the win of a piece); 24. ... R-QB1; 25. QR-K1!, and the B must give up the defence of one or other of the R's; on which B x Kt would lead to the win of whichever is left defenceless.
- 27.Rae1 The quickest road to the win.
- 28.Re8 Violent but intelligible.
