Budapest International Tournament 1970
Paul Keres won the Budapest International Tournament with an unbeaten 10/15, one point ahead of László Szabó. The sixteen-player round robin commemorated the 25th anniversary of Hungary's liberation and preserved all 120 games.
An anniversary field
The international marked the 25th anniversary of Hungary's liberation. Its sixteen-player field brought Keres together with Szabó, Lajos Portisch, Levente Lengyel and a deep Hungarian contingent, plus visitors from the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria.
Every player met every other once. Eight games were played in each of fifteen rounds, producing the complete 120-game collection archived here.
Keres holds the lead
Keres opened with six points from seven games. A contemporary report says illness then forced him to complete the remaining rounds from bed, but he protected his lead with a run of draws and finished unbeaten on five wins and ten draws.
Szabó took second with nine points. Borislav Ivkov and Alexey Suetin shared the next score on 8½, while Keres finished a full point clear without needing a playoff.
