Dortmund 1975
Two years after winning its inaugural edition, Heikki Westerinen came back to the Dortmunder Schachtage and produced one of the great runaway scores of the tournament's early history: 9½ from 11 in a strong twelve-player field, a point and a half clear of the runner-up.
◈A strong, Soviet-flavoured field
The 1975 edition again gathered twelve players for a single round-robin of 66 games. Among the guests were Vladimir Savon — who only four years earlier had stunned the chess world by winning the 1971 Soviet Championship in Leningrad ahead of Tal and Smyslov — the sharp Soviet attacker Viktor Kupreichik, the Yugoslav grandmaster Bruno Parma, and England's Raymond Keene.
◈Westerinen's second title
Westerinen was in irresistible form, finishing on 9½/11 to win by a clear point and a half from Norway's Leif Øgaard on 8. Savon took third on 7½, ahead of Parma and the Polish player Jacek Bednarski, who shared fourth on 7. The victory made Westerinen a two-time Dortmund champion, a distinction only a few players would go on to match.
For a tournament still in its infancy, the presence of a recent Soviet champion and a clutch of international grandmasters showed how quickly Dortmund's young event was gaining stature.
