Dusseldorf 1908
Incomplete record. This archive holds 119 of the 120 games played; 1 is missing.
The German Chess Federation's sixteenth congress gathered sixteen masters in Düsseldorf in the summer of 1908. Frank James Marshall — fresh from winning the previous congress at Nuremberg — simply ran away with it, going through all fifteen rounds unbeaten with eight wins and seven draws for 11½/15, a full point and a half clear of the field. It was his second DSB Congress victory in succession, and he had yet to lose a single game across the two.
A strong German congress
Düsseldorf 1908 was the 16th Congress of the Deutscher Schachbund — the German Chess Federation — and doubled as the fifteenth German Championship. Sixteen masters played a single round-robin of 120 games over a fortnight in August. The line-up was solid rather than elite: several of the very strongest players of the day were absent, and that same month the city also hosted the opening games of the Lasker–Tarrasch match for the world title before it moved on to Munich. Even so, the field held established masters such as Georg Salwe, Rudolf Spielmann, Jacques Mieses, Walter John, Hugo Süchting and Curt von Bardeleben.
The tournament belonged to one man from the start. Marshall, the leading American master, had won the previous congress at Nuremberg in 1906, and he arrived at Düsseldorf in the same form.
Marshall runs the table
Marshall finished on 11½/15 without losing a game — eight wins and seven draws — a point and a half ahead of the rest. Georg Salwe took clear second on 10 in his customary gritty style, but never seriously threatened the leader. Rudolf Spielmann (9½), Walter John (9) and Jacques Mieses (8½) completed the top five.
It kept up an unusual record for Marshall at the DSB Congress: first at Nuremberg 1906 and first again at Düsseldorf 1908, without losing a game in either. He was known for sharp attacking chess, and here he showed he could be consistent too.
“He ran the table at the fairly strong German Chess Congress in Dusseldorf, winning eight, losing none, and finishing a point-and-a-half ahead of the rest of the field.”
Around the crosstable
Lower down the table sat Rudolf Swiderski, who finished second from last on 5½. Düsseldorf was among the last tournaments of his short life; the German master died in 1909, at only thirty-one. The archive here follows the games of the master tournament round by round.
The wider congress also ran a strong Hauptturnier, won by Friedrich Köhnlein — one of the graduation events through which the next generation of German masters earned their standing.
