Netanya International Tournament 1969
Samuel Reshevsky won the 1969 Netanya International Tournament undefeated with 10/13. Seven wins and six draws put the 60-year-old American two points clear of Pál Benkő, Mato Damjanović and William Lombardy.
◈An eighth annual international
Contemporary Chess Life described Netanya 1969 as the city's eighth annual international tournament. Fourteen players from Israel and abroad completed a single round robin at the Kibbutz Artzi Recovery Center, producing all 91 possible pairings.
The field joined established grandmasters Reshevsky, Benkő and Lombardy with leading Israeli players and rising international visitors, including Lubomír Kaválek, Heikki Westerinen and Mato Damjanović.
◈Reshevsky clears the field
Reshevsky did not lose a game. His 10/13 score left Benkő, Damjanović and Lombardy tied for second on eight, with Kaválek, Malkiel Peretz and Daniel Yanofsky another half-point back.
One result required an unusual ruling. Yair Kraidman and Lombardy played through 40...Rh7 before adjournment; Lombardy then failed to appear for the resumption after a postponement request was denied. Kraidman received the point, and the complete played portion of the game remains in this collection.
