The largest of the wartime tournaments in which Alexander Alekhine and Paul Keres met, Prague 1943 set the two visiting stars against the strongest masters of the occupied Czech lands in a twenty-player round-robin. Alekhine was imperious, scoring 17/19 to finish two and a half points clear of the field.
A wartime field in Prague
Held in Prague under the German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the tournament surrounded Alekhine and Keres with the leading Czech players of the day — among them Miroslav Katětov, Jaroslav Šajtar, Jan Foltys and Karel Opočenský. Twenty players contested a single round-robin over nineteen rounds, making this by some margin the biggest event of the Alekhine–Keres wartime series.
Alekhine runs away with it
Alekhine gave up almost nothing, finishing on 17/19 to win by two and a half points from Keres, who scored 14½. Behind the two visitors the mathematician Miroslav Katětov took clear third on 13, with Šajtar and Foltys sharing fourth on 12½.
It was the third event in a row in which Keres finished behind Alekhine, before the pair at last shared first at Salzburg two months later.
