Rubinstein Memorial 1969
The seventh Memoriał Akiby Rubinsteina brought sixteen players from ten countries to the Silesian spa town, and it was Hungary's László Bárczay who came through it unbeaten — five wins and no losses for 10 points from 15 — edging a field that included Bobby Fischer's closest American friend and a Soviet grandmaster who would soon be advising a world championship challenger.
◈A spa-town field with real reach
Held from 2 to 24 August 1969, the seventh Rubinstein Memorial gathered sixteen players for a full round robin of 120 games, with entrants from Hungary, the United States, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, East Germany, Latvia and Czechoslovakia. It was a typically cosmopolitan field for the young Polanica-Zdrój series, already in its second decade of honoring Akiba Rubinstein.
Behind the winner, second and third were shared on 9½ by two very different figures in the game: American international master Anthony Saidy, within a few years to open his family's Long Island home to Bobby Fischer as a refuge before the 1972 world championship match, and Soviet grandmaster Nikolai Krogius, who later that same year would take his seat on Boris Spassky's team for the title defense against Tigran Petrosian in Moscow.
◈Bárczay's clean run
Bárczay, who had taken the international master title in 1966 and the grandmaster title in 1967, went through the tournament without a defeat to finish a clear half-point ahead of the Saidy–Krogius tie, with Yugoslavia's Borislav Ivkov fourth on 9. The best-placed Pole was Andrzej Sydor, who shared fifth on 8½ alongside Vladimir Bagirov of the USSR — a solid result on home soil against a strong international entry.
