Sarajevo 1961 (Bosna)
Sarajevo's annual international brought together the cream of Yugoslav chess and a handful of invited foreign masters. When the dust settled, home favourite Svetozar Gligorić and Czechoslovak grandmaster Luděk Pachman stood level on 7½/11 to share first place, a clear point ahead of the chasing field led by the young Milan Matulović.
◈The Sarajevo tradition
The Sarajevo tournament — later organised under the Bosna banner — was first staged in 1957 and grew into one of the longest-running recurring internationals in the game, in the company of Hastings and Wijk aan Zee. Each edition paired the strong Yugoslav and Bosnian home contingent against a rotating cast of foreign guests, giving local players a regular measuring stick against masters from across the Eastern bloc and beyond.
The 1961 field ran to twelve players over an eleven-round round-robin. Alongside Gligorić — for years Yugoslavia's leading grandmaster — the entry included the visiting Pachman, the veteran Stojan Puc and Vasja Pirc, and rising names such as Matulović and Borislav Milić.
◈A shared summit
Gligorić and Pachman could not be separated, each finishing on 7½ from eleven games to divide the top prize. The result left a clear gap to the rest: Matulović took third on 6½, with Milić right behind him, and no one else broke six points.
For Gligorić it was another steady showing on home soil; for Pachman, one of the strongest players in Czechoslovak history, it confirmed his standing among the visiting elite of the era.
