A Hungarian breakthrough

Sarajevo's annual event, one of the fixtures of the Yugoslav chess calendar, again brought together a strong twelve-player round-robin. The 1962 entry set the home guard — Gligorić, Borislav Ivkov, and the Bosnian regulars — against visitors including West Germany's Klaus Darga, Bulgaria's Milko Bobotsov, Hungary's István Bilek, and Czechoslovakia's Josef Rejfíř.

Portisch, then in his early twenties and rapidly emerging as Hungary's leading player, shared the top honours with Gligorić on 8/11. It was one of the early international successes that would soon carry him into the World Championship Candidates cycles.

Behind the leaders

The two winners left daylight between themselves and the chasing pack. Darga and the Yugoslav veteran Petar Trifunović shared third on 6½, with Bobotsov, Ivkov, and the local Sarajevo players filling out the table below them.
