Twenty years after Richard Réti's death, Czechoslovak chess honoured its hypermodern pioneer with a twenty-player memorial tournament in Trenčianske Teplice, a spa town in western Slovakia famed for its thermal springs. Sweden's Gideon Ståhlberg — then among the world's strongest players — took first with 14/19, half a point ahead of Luděk Pachman and László Szabó. All 190 games of the marathon are preserved in this archive.

◈Remembering Réti

Richard Réti was born in 1889 in Bazin, Austria-Hungary — today Pezinok, Slovakia — and after the empire's collapse represented Czechoslovakia, becoming one of the world's best players of the 1910s and 1920s and a leading theorist of the hypermodern school. He died of scarlet fever in Prague in June 1929, just forty years old.

Two decades later the memorial tournament staged in his native Slovakia drew a genuinely international field to Trenčianske Teplice, a health resort renowned for its sulphur and thermal springs. Alongside the Czechoslovak contingent — Luděk Pachman, Jan Foltys, Čeněk Kottnauer, Emil Richter and others — came László Szabó and József Szily from Hungary, Gideon Ståhlberg from Sweden, Julio Bolbochan from Argentina, Nicolas Rossolimo (fresh from winning Hastings 1948/49), Belgium's Albéric O'Kelly de Galway, the Netherlands' Lodewijk Prins, the British pair Harry Golombek and Robert Wade, Italy's Enrico Paoli and Finland's Kaarle Ojanen.

◈Ståhlberg's great victory

Ståhlberg, who had returned to Europe in 1948 after nearly a decade in Argentina, was rated among the world's top ten by the retrospective Chessmetrics list at the time. Across nineteen rounds he scored ten wins and eight draws against a single defeat — to Kottnauer in round seven — finishing on 14/19.

That was just enough. Pachman and Szabó chased him all the way, sharing second on 13½, with Rossolimo and Bolbochan next on 12 and Foltys on 11½. Ståhlberg remained a world-class competitor into the 1950s, going on to contest the 1953 Candidates tournament in Zürich.

◈A 190-game marathon

A twenty-player round-robin is a rarity at any period: nineteen rounds and 190 games, spread over three weeks at the spa. The bottom half of the table tells its own story of attrition — Wade finished last on 4½ — while the annotators' favourite from the event was Emil Richter's kingside demolition of Paoli, built on an untouchable knight planted on d6.
