Venice 1950
The fourth of Venice's great international tournaments became a private duel between the two Soviet grandmasters sent to contest it. Vasily Smyslov went through all fifteen rounds undefeated — and still finished second. Alexander Kotov, who had dropped a game along the way, edged him by half a point to take first prize.
◈A Soviet pair in Venice
Venice 1950 was the fourth in the city's series of international tournaments, played over September and October. The Soviet Union sent two of its leading grandmasters — Vasily Smyslov and Alexander Kotov — into a broad field of sixteen that drew masters from New Zealand, Chile, Czechoslovakia, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Israel, England and the United States, alongside four Italian representatives. Both Soviets arrived fresh from the world stage, having just played the inaugural Candidates Tournament at Budapest earlier that year.
The race narrowed quickly to a two-man affair between the visitors, with the French-American Nicolas Rossolimo the best of the rest.
◈Kotov's half-point
The tournament turned on a single stumble. In round six Kotov lost to the Italian master Enrico Paoli, falling behind both Smyslov and Rossolimo. His recovery ran through a tense meeting with Rossolimo in which he chose to keep a risky queen endgame alive rather than settle for safety — a decision that could have backfired but instead carried him back to the front.
Kotov finished on 12½/15 despite that lone defeat; Smyslov, unbeaten but held to more draws, trailed by half a point on 12. Rossolimo took clear third with 10, ahead of Ludek Pachman on 9½. Smyslov's Venice games were good enough that several later appeared in his 1952 collection of best games.
