1. 4.exd5 Leading to a drawn position. This variation has been played so often that it is entirely exhausted, and affords no chance for either player to try for a win.
2. 27.Bb1 The manoeuvres of the White King and Queen have enabled Black to begin an attack on the weak Queen's side Pawns, which he conducts with great energy. White ought now to have played P to R 3, and if Q to Kt 3, then P to Kt 4, followed by K to Kt 2, in order to bring the Queen over to the Queen's wing again.
3. 36…d4 Q x P at once would have been much better; White could not then have taken the Knight's Pawn on account of Q to Kt 4, ch, and if 27. Q to Kt 3, then Q to Q 5 (!), followed by Kt to R 4 and B 5, winning.
4. 38…Kg7 A blunder, which loses at once. Q to Kt 4 would still have given him good drawing chances: e.g., 38.... Q to Kt 4; 39. Q x P, Q to B 8, ch; 40. K to Kt 2, Kt to R 4; 41. Q to R 8, ch, K to K 2; 42. Q to K 5, ch, K to Q 2; 43. Kt x B or Kt P, Kt to B 5, ch; 44. K to R 2, Q to B 8 (!), forcing the draw.
