Beverwijk 1967 (Hoogovens)
The 1967 Hoogovens tournament closed out the event's Beverwijk era. Boris Spassky — freshly returned from his first bid for the world title and two years short of the crown itself — took a strong sixteen-player field by half a point. The following winter the tournament packed up and moved down the coast to Wijk aan Zee, where it has stayed ever since.
◈The steelworkers' tournament
The Hoogovens tournament was founded in 1938 and named for its patron, the Koninklijke Hoogovens steel and aluminium works at IJmuiden. For three decades it was staged in the neighbouring town of Beverwijk, growing from a modest local event into one of the strongest annual round-robins in Europe. The 1967 edition would be the last held there.
Sixteen players contested a single round-robin of fifteen rounds — 120 games in all — through the second half of January 1967.
◈Spassky by half a point
Boris Spassky won with 11/15, finishing a single half-point ahead of the Soviet grandmaster Anatoly Lutikov on 10½. Dragoljub Ćirić took clear third on 9, ahead of Bent Larsen on 8½ and Klaus Darga on 8.
Spassky arrived in Beverwijk at the height of his powers. He had lost a narrow World Championship match to Tigran Petrosian in 1966, and would return to defeat Petrosian for the title in 1969. His Beverwijk victory belongs to those peak years.
◈End of an era
For 1968 the tournament left Beverwijk for the seaside village of Wijk aan Zee a few kilometres to the west, where more room was available for the players and the growing crowds. Beverwijk 1967 was therefore the final act at the tournament's founding home — a fitting one, won by a future World Champion.
