The ninth edition of Amsterdam's IBM international brought sixteen grandmasters to the Dutch capital in the high summer of 1969. Hungary's Lajos Portisch won it in commanding style — unbeaten, two points clear by the tenth round, and finishing a point and a half ahead of the field for his third victory in the series.
The ninth IBM tournament
The IBM international, sponsored by International Business Machines and staged annually in Amsterdam from 1961 to 1981, had grown into one of the strongest recurring events on the calendar. Its 1969 edition — the ninth — was a sixteen-player single round-robin of fifteen rounds across nineteen days, directed by the veteran Dutch arbiter Constant Orbaan.
The field mixed a strong Soviet contingent — Leonid Stein, Evgeni Vasiukov and Vladimir Liberzon — with international grandmasters Robert Byrne, Lubomir Kavalek, Klaus Darga, Borislav Ivkov, Florin Gheorghiu and Mato Damjanovic, alongside the home players Jan Hein Donner, Hans Ree, Kick Langeweg, Rob Hartoch and Johan Barendregt.
Portisch unbeaten
Portisch never gave the leaderboard away. By the tenth round he already held a two-point margin, and from there he steered smoothly home, finishing on 11½/15 — a point and a half clear of his nearest rival. He conceded no game the whole way, and contemporary reports found him in exceptional touch throughout.
It was Portisch's third success in the IBM series, confirming a purple patch in a season that also brought him victory at Hastings and a share of first at Monte Carlo. Amsterdam's patient, positional battlefield suited his deeply prepared style perfectly.

The chase behind him
Liberzon took clear second on 10, having held Portisch to a draw in their individual game. Vasiukov followed on 9½, then Damjanovic and Stein shared fourth on 9. Byrne, Darga and Ivkov filled out the upper half on 8½ apiece, and the young Kavalek scored a solid 8. The Dutch contingent found the going hard against so deep a field, with Donner, Langeweg and Barendregt anchoring the standings.
